Since I always try to get my toddlers involved in my baking I like to add bright and colourful elements when I can. These gorgeous funfetti cookies do just that.

I always do this recipe in my stand mixer but you can do it by hand as well. I find using a stand mixer when baking with my little ones helps me control the mess and how much their little fingers get into the dough. They’ve become really good at knowing when the stand mixer is on that they can’t touch the bowl until Mama stops it and lifts it open.

I also find that the stand mixer helps keep their attention on other fun jobs, like pouring in the ingredients. They do always seem hesitant to pour in those sprinkles though, I guess it’s more fun to play with before they go into the cookie dough.

How to Make Funfetti Cookies

Preheat oven to 350 F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

In large bowl or stand mixer beat the butter and sugar until fluffy. I like to mix mine for a solid 3 minutes. Add in the egg and vanilla extract and continue mixing till ingredients are well combined.

In a separate bowl whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix until everything is combined. Add in the sprinkles and mix once more.

Scoop dough into a 1.5 tablespoon balls and make them round. Dip the top and sides of the balls in some extra sprinkles. Arrange on the lined baking sheet 2 inches apart.

Bake for 8 minutes or until the bottoms are golden brown. The cookies may seems a little underdone but will stiffen up after they’ve cooled. Allow cookies to cool on the pan for 5 minutes before moving them.

Tips for Making Perfect Funfetti Cookies

  • Use parchment paper to line your pans. Using cookie spray or butter will make the cookies greasy.
  • Do not use melted butter, if anything you want your butter to be on the colder side. Using melted butter will cause the cookies to spread to much and become flat.
  • If heating butter in the microwave to soften it first cut it into small pieces, heat for 12 seconds, and touch with finger. You should be able to easily poke into it. If not heat for another few seconds. It is better to be slightly cold than melted.
  • Spoon and level the flour means scooping the flour into the measuring cup using a spoon and then levelling off the excess with a knife or your finger. This gets you the proper measurement of flour opposed to just scooping it out with the measuring cup.
  • For chewy cookies do not over bake. Cookies may still seem soft in the middle but will harden up after cooling. Once the bottoms are a golden brown the cookies are done.
  • If cookies lose their round shape you can fix them. As soon as they come out of the oven take a round cookie cutter, slightly large than the cookies, place it around the cookies and gently swirl it.
